UK charities - How to give support through your legacy or will- the facts

  • Almost 7 out of 10 people in the UK support charities, fewer than 1 in 20 remember one in their Will.

  • You don't have to make a difficult choice between family or charity. It's easy to remember both. You can specify either a fixed amount, or a given percentage of your estate to go to your chosen charity. You can specify the amount of your estate to go to family and friends and leave any residue to the charity you wish to support. It's up to you to decide the balance.

  • Any charitable donation is exempt from tax, which means that any money left to charities in a Will is exempt from inheritance tax. So, apart from knowing that the money you've left behind is being put to good use, it can actually make financial sense.

  • In the UK, If someone dies with an estate worth more than £285,000* which is left to someone other than their spouse, there is tax payable at the rate of 40% on the amount above the £285,000. Anything you leave to a charity is deducted before any tax is calculated and doesn't affect your £285,000 allowance.

  • Charities are not liable to pay tax on money left to them in wills.

  • If you leave your affairs in order, your chosen charity should receive your legacy within 6 months. If your financial or tax situation is more complicated, it could take longer.

  • You can let your chosen charity know of your intentions or you can keep your decision a private matter if you prefer.

  • You can leave money, or an item of value such as jewellery, property or shares

How do I leave money to a UK charity through my will?

  • If you have already made a will, just let your solicitor know which charity you wish to support. You don't have to make a new will. If your will is still accurate and up to date, your solicitor can simply add a new section outlining your gift to your chosen charity.
  • If you have not yet made a will, you should contact your solicitor and let him know your intentions.
  • You can also leave money to one, or a number of charities through the Charities Aid Foundation. The advantage of this is that you can change yor mind at ant time withoput incurring any legal fees.

How do I leave money to Mexico Child Link if I am a US citizen?

The easiest way is through an organization called CafAmerica which Mexico Child Link is affiliated to. You can send for an information pack here.

Many people want to continue supporting overseas non-profit organizations (NPOs) beyond their own lifetime. CAFAmerica accepts bequests, which may include suggestions of potential NPO beneficiaries. Bequests are treated as individual gifts.

Mexico Child Link is a UK based charity which has raised its own funding since its foundation in 1992. We raise our funding, much of it from individual donors like yourself, to support a range of services for children and young people with learning disability in Puebla, Mexico. We are a fully tax-exempt non-profit charitable organisation, both in the UK and also in the US, through our accreditation to CAFAmerica. Your support will make a difference to the life of an abandoned child with learning disability (mental handicap) in Mexico. Many of these children live under conditions of extreme poverty. Without our help, the children would live out their lives in Borstals, young offender centres, and psychiatric institutions, or living as street children.
